Author:  Petra F. Bagnardi
Publication Date: January 9th 2014 (first published April 20th

Plot:   Across the ocean, over the years...

Brina and Eagan meet for the first time when she's nine and he's fourteen. They like each other from the very beginning, although their bond isn't immediate, but it grows over the years. What links them is the fact that their parents are photographers and are extremely devoted to their work and to each other; so much so that both Brina and Eagan have to learn how to take care of themselves from a very young age. Despite their differences, age, gender, nationality, Brina is Italian and Eagan is American, they find comfort in their growing friendship.
Then Brina becomes a teenager, and her feelings for her friend start changing and deepening. New desires stir within her. As soon as Brina realizes how those feelings complicate her friendship with Eagan, she runs away from him.
A few years later, Brina is twenty and Eagan is twenty-five, they find one another once again. Brina is studying cinema in Rome and she's also trying to become a musician. Eagan begins to work as an architect in the same city. Eagan wants to be a part of Brina's life anew. Brina, however, is still in love with him; she finds it difficult to act merely as a friend and she keeps pulling away.

Set in the beautiful Rome, this is a sensual and romantic story of friendship and love.

(Recommended for ages 18+, due to sexual content and language)

My Review

It's the worst feeling in the world when an author kindly requests a review for their book and you turn out to not enjoy it as much as you thought you would.

For me, that was sadly the case. Pretty please:

description

A Veil of Glass and Rain was a simple and cute love story of an Italian girl, Brina, and her American boy, Eagan.

They meet when Brina's nine and Eagan's fourteen and develop a friendship that develops into something more for Brina.

She struggles a lot throughout the book in coming to terms that Eagan may not perhaps share the same feelings for her (as she harbors for him) but we later discover that this is not the case.

Ms. Bagnardi does a great job in creating an enticing world filled with hope and innocence mixed with exotic as well as erotic elements.

However, what did not work for me was basically the execution of it all. It just did not click or connect for me. Throughout the book, I just could not believe a lot of the dialogue and events that took place. It just seemed unrealistic and stretched for story use to heighten the plot.

And the amount of flashbacks with the present...kind of through me through whiplash after a while.

So..all in all, an okay book that while it did intrigue me and mean well, just wasn't my cup of tea. That's not to say that my opinion alone matters because it does not. Readers: you can take it as you will but I highly advise you to read it for yourself and form your own opinion. After all, not everyone has the same tastes so you may have different opinions and may just LOVE it. Many others did.
