ARC Review- Fighting Fate (Fighting, #6) by J.B. Salsbury

Title:  Fighting Fate (Fighting, #6)
Author: J.B. Salsbury
Publication Date: May 3rd 2016 by JB Salsbury LLC
Plot: Axelle’s broken.
I live to hold her together.
Killian McCreery only has two dreams . . .
Fight for the UFL.
And Axelle.
He’s watched her give her time and her body to men who don’t deserve to breathe her air. He’s waited, worked hard to become the kind of man she deserves, hoping one day, when the time is right, he’d get the opportunity to make her happy. After a painful anniversary, he finally gets his chance.
But life has a way of sucker-punching its victims—striking when they least expect it in the most devastating ways.
Killian loves me.
But I screwed up. Big time.
Axelle Daniels appears to be the typical college student—parties, hangovers, and men. No one knows that inside she’s a mess, and no amount of booze or meaningless relationships have managed to fill the cracks in her heart. But Killian knows. He’s been there since the night it all began and has never left her side.
When she wakes up one morning to find the consequences of her actions have caught up to her, even Killian’s white-knighthood can’t save her now.
Fate is put to the test when, for the first time in their five-year friendship, they no longer have each other to lean on. When he becomes a UFL superstar, she hardly recognizes the man he used to be. And she no longer needs him to hold her together.
With the foundation of their friendship gone, they’ll discover that even a love that is meant to be needs to be fought for and destiny is a choice.

Wah, such a beauteous combination of unconditional love and friendship that transcends through time, space, continents, and utter heartbreak!!

Axelle is by far one the most scarred and broken characters within the Fighting Series. We are introduced to her in bk2 of the series, and from there and to now, we learn the circumstances leading up to her birth and her inner turmoil that she feels towards herself.

SHE’S a girl who does not feel worthy. And yet, in HIS eyes, she has everything he could ever want.

Axelle drowns herself in destructive ways and individuals but the only person who has always been the light in the midst and her protector throughout, has been her best friend Killian. The boy who has always been secretly and madly in love with her. And the boy she's always been in love with since the day she had asked him to the Valentine's Day dance, but never felt good enough for.

Now both college students at UNLV, Killian wants to finally let his intentions towards Axelle known at the risk of jeopardizing his heart and future.

Can Killian claim the girl of his dreams?....
Should he take off from school and represent the USA in the UFL while being stationed in the UK?...
And with one HUGE revelation about to be unfold, is Killian's love enough to stand testament to what's about to come?.... Can he hold onto the girl who is his reason for being, while also giving her a reason to live for herself as well?

He has always been her savior, but sometimes she needs to save herself as well and fight for herself. To fight for him.

I have to say, I REALLY LOVED Killian.

Killian Ax

He has had a hard life himself but he chooses not to dwell within the bad and looks optimistically toward the good. He is the epitome of book boyfriends and will be loyal to you by a fault. He goes in all or nothing and to him, Axelle is his sun and muse for existence. He will always be by her side. That is, unless he is told that he is not wanted.

For Axelle, her emptiness bled through the pages of my kindle. Though she has a loving mom, step dad and new baby brother, she still feels the pangs of betrayal regarding her birth father and the rejection that came with it. She dallies into meaningless interactions with boys on campus to fill a sort of void for her, unbeknownst to her, that what she’s been looking for has and has always been right in front of her.

How much is enough before she pushes the one other good thing in her life that makes complete sense before it goes away forever? And can she ever win him back?

Author JB Salsbury has done it again with a poignant and soul-searching read about love, family, friendship, self-worth and self-identity.

Killian and Axelle’s story was not an easy one but never has the course of love ever sailed smoothly. Some parts were lovely and inspiring while some were devastating and made me gnaw on my arm.

For some reason during the course of reading, I kept playing Sara Bareilles’s “Gravity” as I felt it depicted this raw and vulnerable dilemma felt by Axelle. Yes, the song is portraying a tale of two lovers, but I feel where this song fits into the whole gist of things, is the similar backings of wanting freedom from something but feeling an emotional hold from someone. In this case, for Axelle, it comes from her dad which leads to her self-identity crisis. It weighs heavy on her, and although she wants to escape from it, she cannot. She wants to be set free from this burden and live a happy life with her family and love herself but she struggles immensely throughout.

As for Axelle's and Killian's romance, now that I think of it... in ties to Bareille's song, it represents both characters approach to love in entirely in opposite ways. Whereas Killian is strongly upfront and passionately in love with Axelle and is not in conflict with his feelings about her. In Axelle's case, however, she is also undoubtedly in love with Killian but fights it every step of the way; and yet, can't seem to break the pull of gravity that pulls her back to Killian.

Will they stop fighting the inevitable and give into what has always been fated by destiny? Or will they choose to leave it all behind? Some things are worth fighting for...
